Pebax® MED Polyether Block Amide

Pebax by Arkema
Pebax® MED Polyether Block Amide

The Pebax MED product family covers a wide range of performance, from tough and rigid engineering thermoplastics to soft, rubbery and resilient elastomers.

Pebax® MED polyether block amides are plasticizer-free, thermoplastic elastomers belonging to the engineering polymer family. They are easy to process by injection molding and profile or film extrusion. Medical grade Pebax® can be easily melt blended with many other polymers. Its unique chemistry (polyether block amide – PEBA) allows it to achieve a wide range of physical and mechanical properties by varying the monomer block types and ratios. The Pebax® MED product family covers a wide range of performance, from tough and rigid engineering thermoplastics to soft, rubbery and resilient elastomers.

The remarkable processing performance of medical grade Pebax® makes it an ideal biomedical material for medical device components:

  • Class VI certification
  • Sterilizable (ETO, steam, gamma up to 10Mrads)
  • Bondable by adhesives or RF welding
  • Easily compounded with other polymers and additives for custom performance
  • Excellent dynamic properties due to low hysteresis
  • Excellent impact resistance and retention of flexibility at low temperatures
  • Consistent durometer and flexibility at room and body temperature
  • Good resistance to most chemicals

Available Medical Grades:
Standard Medical

Pebax® 2533 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. This grade is the most flexible Pebax grade with a Shore D hardess of 27 and a flexural modulus of 1,740 psi (12 MPa) for flexible catheter tips and overmolding or coextrusion of soft outer layers.

Pebax® 3533 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. This soft grade of polyether block amide has a Shore D hardness of 33 and a flexural modulus of 3,045 psi (21 MPa), making it ideally suited for soft distal tips or flexible distal segments of catheter shafts.

Pebax® 4033 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. This ‘mid-range’ polyether block amide grade offers a Shore D hardness of 42 and a flexural modulus of 11,170 psi (77 MPa), well suited for medium flexibility catheter tubing and film applications.

Pebax® 4533 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide with a Shore D hardness of 46 and a flexural modulus of 12,475 psi (86 MPa).  This ‘mid-range’ polyether block amide grade offers a balance between softness and rigidity, and is well suited for flexible catheter tubing application that require additional mechanical performance.

Pebax® 5533 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide that may be considered the stiffest ‘mid-range’ polyether block amide in the portfolio. It offers a Shore D hardness of 54 and a flexural modulus of 24,660 psi (170 MPa) making it an ideal choice for catheter tubing that requires good flexibility and kink resistance.

Pebax® 6333 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and a higher rigid polyamide component providing for increase mechanical performance for interventional catheters. This grade offers Shore D hardness of 64 and a flexural modulus of 41,335 psi (285 MPa).  It is specially designed to meet the stringent requirements of the medical applications such as minimally invasive devices with an excellent combination of properties such as: kink resistance, low friction coefficient and superior dynamic response.

Pebax® 7033 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and a higher rigid polyamide component providing for increased mechanical performance in catheter shafts and balloon applications. This grade offers Shore D hardness of 69 and a flexural modulus of 56,565 psi (390 MPa), and is  specially designed to meet the stringent requirements of the medical applications such as minimally invasive devices, including  kink resistance, low friction coefficient and superior dynamic response.

Pebax® 7233 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and the highest rigid polyamide component of the commercial grades providing for maximum mechanical performance in catheter shafts, balloons and molded components. This grade offers a Shore D hardness of 69 and a flexural modulus of 74,400 psi (513 MPa) and is  specially designed to meet the stringent requirements of the medical applications such as minimally invasive devices, including  kink resistance, low friction coefficient and superior dynamic response.

Manufactured by Arkema Inc. and exclusively distributed by Foster Corporation, Pebax® 7433 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of a flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. This unique grade is specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of medical applications such as minimally invasive catheters and balloons. Pebax® 7433 SA 01 MED offers an excellent combination of properties such as kink resistance, low coefficient of friction and superior dynamic response.

Hydrophilic Medical

Pebax® MV 1074 SA 01 MED is a thermoplastic elastomer made of hydrophilic flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. Pebax® MV 1074 SA 01 MED is an inherently dissipative polymer and can be dry blended or compounded with an isolative polymer to lower the surface resistivity. This grade offers the highest quality and it is specially designed to meet the stringent requirements of the medical applications such as minimally invasive devices.

Pebax® MH 1657 is a thermoplastic elastomer made of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide. Pebax® MH 1657 is an inherently dissipative polymer and can be dry blended or compounded with a polymer matrix to lower the surface resistivity of
the final part. This hydrophilic grade when extruded into either a thin film or laminated on to a substrate, also offers excellent permeability to moisture vapor while remaining waterproof.
